Birdfy Feeder Metal 2 4K – a squirrel-proof bird feeder with a 4K camera

Every smart bird feeder has the same secret fan club: squirrels. You put out seed for cardinals, and a furry little burglar empties it before lunch. On camera. In high definition.
The Birdfy Feeder Metal 2 4K is a solar-powered smart bird feeder with a 4K camera, an all-metal body and an app that tells you which bird just landed. Birdfy launched it in April 2026 as the next step up from its earlier metal feeder.
The 4K is the headline. The metal is the real story.

What is the Birdfy Feeder Metal 2 4K?
It’s a small metal house for birds, with a solar panel on the roof, a seed hopper you can see through and a camera that looks out at the perch. Birdfy is the bird feeder brand from Netvue, and it has made smart feeders for a few years now. This one is built to survive: Birdfy says the body is chew-proof metal, rated IP66 against rain and snow, with a beech wood perch.
The specs, as Tom’s Guide listed them: 4K video at 20 frames per second, a 120-degree field of view, and Wi-Fi on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz. An external antenna helps the signal reach a feeder far from the house. Inside is a 9,000mAh battery that the 2W solar panel tops up, according to the Amazon listing.
How does it work?
You hang it on a pole, a wall or a tree. The kit comes with mounts for all of them. When a bird lands, the camera records a clip and Birdfy’s OrniSense AI tries to name the species. Birdfy says it knows more than 6,000. You get a notification on your phone, and you can watch live, save clips and share them with the family.
Refilling is easy: the roof tilts open, you pour in the seed and it locks shut again. There’s also a speaker, which Tom’s Guide editor Mike Prospero used to scold squirrels from inside the house. I respect that.
The good and the not-so-good
The good: it’s tough. Prospero found that the metal grate kept squirrels from emptying it in a day, which his Bird Buddy couldn’t manage, so he refilled it much less often. He also liked how easy it is to refill and the number of mounting options. The AI got sparrows right and even told male and female cardinals apart. The Amazon version includes lifetime AI bird ID with no monthly fee.
The not-so-good: the video. Prospero called it good but not great, softer than he expected from 4K, with a small focus zone and washed-out skies. His older 1080p Bird Buddy footage looked more detailed. The AI once tagged a brown-headed cowbird as a Barbados bullfinch, and it labeled squirrels as just “animal”. The extra cloud storage plans are confusing, and the antenna and cables don’t make it prettier. Tom’s Guide gave it 3.5 out of 5.
Who is the Birdfy Feeder Metal 2 4K for?
Backyard birders with a squirrel problem, and anyone tired of plastic feeders that crack after one winter. It’s a great gift for the parent or grandparent who already names the birds at the window, as long as their Wi-Fi reaches the yard.
Skip it if you care most about pretty footage. Prospero got nicer video from a cheaper Bird Buddy, and the newer Bird Buddy 2 is worth a look too. Just budget for more seed.
Where can I buy the Birdfy Feeder Metal 2 4K?
Birdfy sells it on its own site, and its Amazon store has the moss green version with lifetime AI bird ID included. It was about 250 bucks on Amazon at the time of writing (October 2026).
