Three Hotel Chocolat Velvetisers in Chalk, Pebble and Pewter with wooden handles

Confession: I make hot chocolate the lazy way. Powder, hot milk, a spoon, and a sad layer of clumps at the bottom of the mug that I pretend not to see.

The Hotel Chocolat Velvetiser is a hot chocolate maker that whisks real chocolate flakes into milk and, according to Hotel Chocolat, heats it in about two minutes. The new version, launched in 2025, adds a cold setting for iced chocolate too.

It’s basically a milk frother that went to finishing school. And I want one for December.

What is the Velvetiser?

Hotel Chocolat is a British chocolatier and cacao grower, founded in 2003. Its original Velvetiser only made hot drinks. The all-new model looks like a cacao pod, with ridged sides and a solid ash wood handle. Designer Andrew Wicks shaped it. It comes in three colors: Chalk (white), Pebble (a warm, earthy mauve) and Pewter (metallic).

On Amazon in the US it comes with a mug and a glass, and it makes one serving of about 9 ounces at a time.

How does it work?

You pour milk into the jug, add a sachet of chocolate flakes and set the dial on the base. Turn it one way for hot (the light goes red), the other way for cold (blue), and press.

For hot drinks, Hotel Chocolat says it melts the chocolate at around 155°F, warm enough to melt it without scorching. A custom “petal whisk” spins a vortex while ridges inside the jug keep it stable. Hotel Chocolat says that’s where the thick, silky texture comes from.

The cold setting pulses gently to blend chocolate into chilled milk, so no ice melts into your drink. It needs Hotel Chocolat’s cold recipes, which are milled extra fine so they dissolve without heat.

The good and the not-so-good

What I like:

  • Real chocolate, not cocoa powder. The flavor list goes from 70% dark to salted caramel and orange.
  • The cold mode makes it a year-round machine. GameRevolution found the iced drinks “just as good” as the hot ones.
  • It’s simple. One dial, one button, no settings menu.
  • It looks great on a counter, which matters for a gift.

What could be better:

  • Chocolate isn’t included on the Amazon version. Early buyers grumbled about this, and the sachets cost about 25 bucks for 10 servings.
  • The jug is hand wash only, which the same reviewer called “a bit tedious”.
  • It’s picky about chocolate. Hotel Chocolat’s own sachets fit it best, and those add up.
  • Durability questions. A few early buyers report broken plastic parts after a few weeks.

Who is the Velvetiser for?

The friend who orders hot chocolate at a coffee shop and isn’t embarrassed about it. It makes a lovely holiday gift, and it fits the whole family because everyone can make their own flavor one cup at a time.

Skip it if you mostly want coffee foam. The Dreo BaristaMaker is built for latte milk. If you only need hot drinks, the original hot-only Velvetiser is still sold and costs less. For other cozy gift ideas, see our gifts for coffee lovers and kitchen gadget gifts.

Where can I buy the Velvetiser?

Hotel Chocolat sells the all-new Velvetiser on Amazon. The Pebble version was about 165 bucks at the time of writing (October 2026), and Chalk and Pewter are on the same page. Add a box of drinking chocolate if it’s a gift, or the first cup will be warm milk.

No more clumps at the bottom of the mug. Take my money!
