Sonic was never an arcade hero. He grew up on the living room carpet, next to a Sega Genesis and a kid yelling that the water level was unfair. So it’s a bit funny that Sonic finally has his own arcade cabinet. A very small one.

The Sonic Mighty Player is an 11-inch mini arcade cabinet with four classic Sonic games built in, a real joystick and a rechargeable battery. My Arcade makes it under license from SEGA of America, and the two companies launched it on December 1, 2025.

It’s a desk toy that you can actually play. I want one next to my monitor.

What is the Sonic Mighty Player?

It’s a shrunken stand-up arcade cabinet in blue Sonic artwork, with a SEGA marquee on top, Green Hill Zone on the sides and Dr. Eggman peeking out above the screen. My Arcade has been making licensed retro mini consoles for years, from Pac-Man pocket players to the Atari Gamestation Go.

What you get, according to My Arcade and the Amazon listing:

  • Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic Spinball and Sonic 3D Blast
  • a 3.5-inch full-color screen
  • a joystick and arcade-style buttons
  • a built-in speaker with volume control and a 3.5mm headphone jack
  • a rechargeable battery (My Arcade says up to six hours, the Amazon listing says four to five)
  • an AC adapter and charge cable in the box
  • wood construction, about 11 inches tall and 2 pounds

The timing is good, too. The first Sonic game came out in June 1991, so the blue guy turned 35 this year.

How does it work?

Charge it, switch it on, pick a game from the menu with the joystick. That’s it. No TV, no cartridges, no account. The battery means you can pull it off the shelf and play on the couch, and the headphone jack means you can do that at 1 a.m. without waking anyone up.

There’s also a cheaper sibling, the Sonic Joystick Player. It has only Sonic 1 and 2, runs on four AA batteries or a USB-C cable, and costs half as much. The Mighty Player is the one that looks like a real cabinet.

The good and the not-so-good

What I like:

  • It looks great switched off. That matters for a thing that will live on a shelf.
  • Four officially licensed games, including Sonic 2, which is still the best one. Fight me.
  • Battery and headphone jack, so it’s actually portable.
  • Owners rate it 4.3 out of 5 on Amazon at the time of writing.

What could be better:

  • About 120 bucks for four games you may already own on other platforms.
  • A 3.5-inch screen is small for Sonic at full speed. You will run into spikes you didn’t see coming.
  • One player only, so no Tails buddy mode on the couch.
  • Few big written reviews so far. Most of the coverage is launch news.

Who is the Sonic Mighty Player for?

The Sonic fan who already has the plush, the movie tickets and the hoodie. It’s also a good gift for anyone who grew up with a Genesis and now has a desk that needs one fun object on it.

Skip it if you want the most games for the money. A handheld with a big library makes more sense then. And if you prefer real arcade games, the Lunar Lander Quarter Arcade and the two-player NBA Jam Countercade are more authentic cabinets.

Where can I buy the Sonic Mighty Player?

It’s on Amazon US for about 120 bucks at the time of writing (October 2026), sold through the My Arcade store. Best Buy and Walmart carry it as well.

Gotta go fast. To the checkout, that is. Take my money!
