8BitDo FlipPad – a flip-down controller that plugs into your phone

Every phone controller I’ve looked at has the same small annoyance. It needs charging, it needs pairing, and the moment a message comes in, you have to take the whole thing off to answer it.

The 8BitDo FlipPad skips all three. It’s a tiny controller that plugs into your phone’s USB-C port and folds down over the bottom half of the screen. Need the screen back? Flip it up, like an old flip phone. Done.

No battery. No Bluetooth. Thirty bucks. I’m in.

What is the 8BitDo FlipPad?

8BitDo is the Chinese controller maker known for retro-styled gamepads, like the 8BitDo 64 for the Nintendo 64. The FlipPad was first shown at CES in January 2026 and started shipping at the end of July 2026.

It’s built for vertical, portrait-mode play: Game Boy-style emulators, retro collections and mobile games with controller support. The layout is classic 8BitDo: a D-pad, ABXY buttons, Select and Start, plus six extra buttons. There are no thumbsticks.

The numbers, from 8BitDo:

  • 70 x 66.5 x 19.7 mm and 31.5 grams
  • Wired USB-C; it runs on your phone’s power
  • Works with iPhones on iOS 26.2 or later and Android phones on Android 13 or later
  • Fits most phone cases up to 2 mm thick, and phones that are 8 to 10 mm thick
  • Hinge rated for over 6,000 flips, USB-C plug for over 10,000 insertions (lab numbers, says 8BitDo)

How does it work?

You plug it in and play. Because it’s wired, there’s nothing to pair and nothing to charge. When you want to tap the screen, answer a call or reply to a message, you flip the controller up and keep it plugged in.

Brandon Saltalamacchia at Retro Dodo gave it a 9.4 out of 10. He found the latency very low thanks to the wired connection, liked the clicky buttons a lot, and says his iPhone recognized it straight away.

The good and the not-so-good

What I like:

  • Nothing to charge. A controller you can leave in a jacket pocket for months and it still works.
  • The flip trick. It gets out of your way without coming off.
  • The size. At 31.5 grams, you won’t notice it in a pocket.
  • The price: about the same as a couple of mobile games.

What could be better:

  • Retro Dodo found that it covers part of the phone’s speaker, so the sound gets a bit muffled.
  • It only hangs on by the USB-C plug, so it wobbles a little when you push it from the side, says the same review.
  • The extra shoulder-style buttons sit on the face, so you press them with your thumbs.
  • Thick protective cases won’t fit.
  • No sticks, so 3D games are out.

Who is the 8BitDo FlipPad for?

Retro fans who play emulators or Game Boy-era games on their phone, and who hate charging yet another gadget. It’s also a cheap, clever stocking stuffer for anyone who still plays Tetris on the train.

If you’d rather have a Bluetooth clamp with its own battery, the GameSir Pocket Taco does a similar job for a few dollars more. If you want sticks for modern games, get the Backbone One instead.

Where can I buy the 8BitDo FlipPad?

8BitDo sells it on Amazon in the white-and-grey G Classic colors, for about 30 bucks at the time of writing (October 2026). There’s also a black edition, but that one is only sold on 8BitDo’s own eShop.

A controller that never needs charging. Finally.
