8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller – a PC gamepad with glowing sticks and its own dock

Every PC gamer has a drawer. In that drawer lives a controller with a left stick that drifts slowly to the upper right, like it’s trying to leave. Next to it: a cable that only works at one specific angle.
The 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller is the replacement that drawer deserves. It’s a wireless gamepad for Windows, Steam Deck, Android and Apple devices that comes with its own charging dock, sticks that shouldn’t drift and little light rings that glow around your thumbs.
It’s about 60 bucks. For what’s in the box, that’s a lot of controller.

What is the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless?
It’s the 2025 successor to 8BitDo’s original Ultimate controller. 8BitDo is the Chinese accessory maker best known for retro-style gamepads (we covered their N64-style 8BitDo 64 earlier), but this one is a modern Xbox-layout controller for PC.
The headline feature is the sticks. 8BitDo uses TMR (tunneling magnetoresistance) sensors, the first time it has used them. Like Hall effect sticks, they read position with magnets instead of the rubbing contacts that wear out and cause drift. 8BitDo says TMR is also more precise and uses less power.
Then there’s the dock. You drop the controller in and it charges. Pick it up and it reconnects. The 2.4G USB-C receiver plugs into the back of the dock, so one cable to your PC handles both charging and the wireless signal.
Features
- TMR joysticks with an RGB “Fire Ring” around each stick
- Triggers that switch between linear Hall effect and short, clicky tactile mode
- Two back paddles plus extra L4/R4 bumpers next to the shoulder buttons
- 2.4G wireless with 1000Hz polling (wireless and wired), plus Bluetooth for Android and Apple
- 6-axis motion control and rumble
- 1000mAh battery, according to the Amazon listing
- Ultimate Software V2 for remapping, stick and trigger tuning, macros and three profiles
The good and the not-so-good
What I like:
- The dock. It’s the reason I’d pick this over a cheaper pad. No hunting for cables, and the controller is always charged.
- The trigger switch. Hall effect for racing games, tactile clicks for shooters. A nice touch at this price.
- Profiles live on the controller itself. One Amazon reviewer was thrilled you don’t need the software running, or even an account, once your buttons are set.
- The price. Amazon buyers keep comparing it to “pro” controllers that cost two or three times as much.
What could be better:
- It doesn’t work on Xbox or PlayStation consoles. This is a PC, Steam Deck, mobile and Apple controller.
- Use the right mode. One buyer almost returned it because games didn’t recognize it over Bluetooth on Windows. Switching to the 2.4G receiver fixed everything.
- The D-pad divides people. Some reviewers love it, others call it a bit mushy for diagonals.
- No headphone jack, and the battery isn’t user-replaceable.
Who is the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 for?
PC and Steam players who want one good controller that just sits on the desk, charged and ready. It’s also a great “player 2” gift: cheap enough to buy two, nice enough that nobody fights over who gets the bad one.
Skip it if you play on an Xbox or PS5. Get an official console controller instead. And if you mostly play on your phone, a clip-on controller like the Backbone One fits in a pocket better.
Where can I buy the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless?
8BitDo sells it on Amazon in black, white and purple (plus a few special editions). At the time of writing (October 2026) the black one is about 60 bucks, dock and receiver included. Note that there’s also a separate Ultimate 2 Bluetooth model for the Nintendo Switch, so check you’re getting the “Wireless” one for PC.
Your drawer of drifting controllers can finally retire.
