Bartesian Duet – a cocktail machine that works like a coffee pod maker

Every holiday party has one person stuck behind the kitchen counter, squeezing limes and asking “was that one or two ounces?” Usually it’s the host. Usually they miss the good conversations.
The Bartesian Duet is a cocktail machine that makes mixed drinks from a capsule and your own liquor, a bit like a coffee pod machine for margaritas. Pop in a capsule, pick a strength, press a button, and it pours.
I’m a coffee guy, so the idea of a Keurig for booze makes me grin. It also makes me a little suspicious.

What is the Bartesian Duet?
It’s the compact, two-bottle version of the Bartesian cocktail machine. The bigger Bartesian holds four or five spirits. The Duet holds two glass bottles of whatever you drink most, say vodka and tequila, next to a removable water tank. It measures 12.5 by 12.75 by 9.5 inches, so it fits on a normal counter or bar cart.
The capsules hold no alcohol. They contain juice concentrates, bitters and extracts, and you supply the spirits. Bartesian lists more than 50 cocktails that work in the Duet, from margaritas and cosmos to an old fashioned. The one exception is the Long Island Iced Tea capsule. Two bottles can’t cover a drink with that many spirits in it.
How does it work?
Each capsule has a barcode. The machine reads it, knows which spirit the drink needs and draws it from the right bottle. On the LCD screen you turn a dial to choose the strength: mocktail, light, regular or strong. It then mixes spirit, water and the capsule contents straight into your glass.
The strength setting is really a water setting. Pick “mocktail” and you get the mixer without the booze, which is handy when half your guests are driving home. The spent capsule pops up on a spring, and the glass bottles and water tank go in the dishwasher.
The good and the not-so-good
What I like:
- Anyone can make a decent drink. No jigger, no recipe, no shaker.
- Every guest can have a different cocktail without you buying ten mixers.
- The mocktail setting means non-drinkers aren’t stuck with soda.
- It’s small for what it does, and The Gadgeteer called it easy to use and good-looking.
What could be better:
- Taste is divisive. Amanda Silberling at TechCrunch found most drinks “a little bit artificial”. Her group’s favorite was the lemon drop, where the only alcohol was their own vodka.
- Capsules cost money. A six-pack was about 15 bucks on Amazon when I checked, so roughly 2.50 per drink before the booze.
- Two bottles means two spirits at a time. Switching from tequila to gin means swapping bottles.
- Early buyers report it needs regular rinsing, and sweet liqueurs in the bottles can confuse it.
Who is the Bartesian Duet for?
People who host a lot and want to actually sit down. It’s a great gift for the friend whose home bar is a bottle of vodka and good intentions. Fans of one or two spirits will get the most out of it.
Skip it if you love making cocktails by hand. Cocktail nerds will miss the fresh citrus. Spend the money on good bitters and a Tipsi Tray to carry the results. For frozen drinks, the Ninja Slushi is the more fun party trick. More ideas for the person who has everything are in our kitchen gadget gifts.
Where can I buy the Bartesian Duet?
Bartesian sells the Duet on Amazon, where it was about 299 bucks at the time of writing (October 2026). Capsules are sold separately in variety packs, so add one to the cart or the gift ends at unboxing.
