BenQ ScreenBar Pro – a monitor light that switches on when you sit down

Desk lamps are bad at one job. They take up desk space, and then they either shine in your eyes or bounce off your screen. Often both, depending on how hard you bumped it that morning.
The BenQ ScreenBar Pro is a monitor light: a slim LED bar that clamps on top of your screen and lights the desk in front of it. The trick that makes the Pro different is a motion sensor. Sit down and it turns on. Walk away and it turns itself off.
A lamp with better manners than most of my coworkers. I want one.

What is the BenQ ScreenBar Pro?
It’s a 50 cm (about 19.7 inch) light bar that hangs over the top edge of your monitor with a weighted clamp. BenQ, the Taiwanese monitor maker, says it built the first monitor light bar in 2017, and the ScreenBar Pro is its wide model for big, curved and ultrawide screens.
The light is aimed down and slightly forward with what BenQ calls asymmetric optics. The point: light hits the desk, not the screen, so you don’t get a white glare stripe over your spreadsheet. BenQ says it puts 500 lux over an area of 85 x 50 cm (33.5 x 19.7 inches), with over 1,000 lux in the center.
How does the motion sensor work?
There’s an ultrasonic sensor in the bar. According to BenQ it detects movement within about 60 cm (24 inches) in front of the screen, in a cone, so walking past your desk shouldn’t set it off. When you sit down it switches on. When nothing moves for five minutes, it dims and turns off.
There’s also an ambient light sensor. Auto-dimming adjusts the brightness in real time to keep the desk at about 500 lux as the daylight changes. If you’d rather choose yourself, there are 16 brightness levels and 8 color temperatures from warm 2,700K to cool 6,500K, set with touch buttons on top of the bar.

The good and the not-so-good
The good:
- Paul Hatton at Digital Camera World praised the light coverage, the ultrawide spread and the clamp, and called it “beautifully built”.
- Zero desk space. If your desk is already a mess of cables and coffee mugs, that matters.
- The auto on/off means it won’t burn all night because you forgot it on Friday.
The not-so-good:
- The same Digital Camera World review calls the touch controls “temperamental”. That’s the main complaint.
- It’s a lot of money for a lamp. A basic light bar costs a fraction of this. You’re paying extra for the width, the sensor and the clamp.
- One light, one direction. If you want a glow behind your monitor too, that’s the ScreenBar Halo 2, which costs more again.
Who is the BenQ ScreenBar Pro for?
People who sit at a desk for hours, especially with a wide or curved monitor, and want better light without another lamp on the desk. It’s a nice upgrade gift for anyone who works from home and complains about tired eyes at 4 pm.
If the person you’re shopping for uses a laptop only, skip it: the clamp needs a monitor. A regular lamp like the Neatfi XL task lamp makes more sense there. More desk ideas: the MOFT smart desk mat and the Native Union Rise laptop stand.
Where can I buy the BenQ ScreenBar Pro?
BenQ sells it through its own store on Amazon US, in black (below) and silver. It was about 139 bucks at the time of writing (October 2026).
A lamp that notices you sit down. Turns out that’s all I wanted from a lamp.
