LEGO Donkey Kong Arcade – a brick-built cabinet where the barrels actually roll

Most LEGO sets for adults are very pretty and very still. You build them, you put them on a shelf, and then they collect dust while looking great. Fine. But I want to push something.
The LEGO Donkey Kong Arcade does let you push something. It’s a 1,367-piece LEGO Super Mario set (number 72051) that rebuilds the first level of the classic arcade game, and it plays: pull a lever to send barrels rolling down the girders, steer Jumpman with a joystick and hit a button to jump over them. A display piece with a mini game inside. That’s my kind of shelf decoration.

What is the LEGO Donkey Kong Arcade?
It’s an 18+ set from LEGO’s Super Mario line, which also gave us the LEGO Game Boy. LEGO revealed it in July 2026 and it went on sale on August 1, 2026, at a list price of $199.99.
The build is a colorful upright frame with the level inside: Donkey Kong on top, Lady shouting “HELP!”, the ladders, the hammers and an oil drum. The hero of the scene is Jumpman, the first version of Mario, with a new pixel-art printed tile. A big DONKEY KONG logo sits on top, built from bricks. LEGO says the finished model is over 15.5 inches (39 cm) high, 10.5 inches wide and 5.5 inches deep, so it fits on a normal shelf.
How does it work?
There are three controls at the front, according to the review on New Elementary:
- a lever on the left lifts barrels up a barrel lift to Donkey Kong
- a joystick in the middle moves Jumpman left and right
- an orange button on the right makes him jump
Once a barrel reaches the top, it drops and rolls down the girders toward Jumpman. LEGO says the mechanism circulates 21 barrels in a continuous loop, so you don’t have to fish them out and reload. There are regular orange barrels and blue barrels with extra weight inside, and the reviewer found their routes down the level hard to predict. Sliding doors give you access to the lift if a barrel gets stuck.
The good and the not-so-good
The good:
- It’s a toy you can play with, which most adult display sets are not.
- It instantly reads as Donkey Kong, even from across the room.
- Amazon buyers rate it 4.8 stars from 79 ratings so far.
The not-so-good:
- Jumpman can move sideways and jump, but he can’t climb the ladders or reach the hammers. Brick Fanatics and New Elementary both point that out.
- The level is simplified: four girders instead of the six in the arcade original, per New Elementary.
- Most of the decoration is stickers. Only the barrels and the Jumpman tile are printed.
- Both reviews call the price steep for the piece count. New Elementary’s advice is to wait for a discount.
Who is the LEGO Donkey Kong Arcade for?
It’s for retro gamers who build LEGO, or LEGO fans who grew up on Nintendo. It works best on a desk or a game room shelf where people will walk past and pull the lever. If you’d rather spend less, the Game Boy set is the cheaper Nintendo build. If you want a real arcade game to play, look at the Lunar Lander Quarter Arcade. Where can I buy the LEGO Donkey Kong Arcade?
It’s on Amazon for about 200 bucks at the time of writing (October 2026), so basically list price. LEGO.com sells it too.
It’s-a me, broke-o. I’ll show myself out.
