Sony INZONE H6 Air – an open-back gaming headset that weighs almost nothing

Most gaming headsets feel like a helmet. After two hours of Elden Ring your ears are hot, your head is squeezed, and you look like an air traffic controller. Great for focus. Less great for comfort.
The Sony INZONE H6 Air is a wired, open-back gaming headset that weighs about 199 grams without the mic. Sony calls it its lightest gaming headset, and it launched in the US on April 14, 2026.
Open-back is the interesting part. It’s common in studio headphones and rare in gaming. I like that Sony tried it.

What is the Sony INZONE H6 Air?
INZONE is Sony’s gaming gear brand, next to its PlayStation hardware. The H6 Air is the open-back model in that line. Open-back means the outside of each ear cup is a grille, so sound (and air) can move in and out. You get a wider, more natural sound field and cooler ears. You also give up most of the noise blocking.
What Sony lists:
- open-back design with an aluminium build
- about 199 grams without the detachable mic and cable
- drivers based on the technology in Sony’s MDR-MV1 open-back studio monitors
- a detachable cardioid boom mic on a flexible arm
- the spring hinge headband from the INZONE H9 II
- an “RPG/Adventure” EQ profile tuned with sound designers from PlayStation Studios
- virtual 7.1 surround and 360 Spatial Sound for Gaming through the included USB-C audio box
It’s wired only. No Bluetooth, no 2.4 GHz dongle.
How does open-back help in games?
A closed headset pushes sound into a small sealed box around your ear. An open-back one lets it breathe, so a footstep behind you sounds more like it’s actually behind you. PC Gamer lists “immersive and rich audio” as a plus, and TechRadar’s headline praises the sound and the comfort. Several reviewers say you can wear it for hours without the usual sweaty ears.
The good and the not-so-good
What I like:
- Very light for a gaming headset.
- Studio-headphone drivers in a gaming product. That’s a nice bit of family recycling at Sony.
- The mic and cable come off, so it also works as plain headphones.
- A sound profile tuned with PlayStation’s own sound people for story games.
What could be better:
- Basically no isolation. T3 says so plainly, and everyone in the room hears your game too.
- Wired only. PC Gamer calls it still quite expensive for a wired headset.
- PC Gamer also found the mic struggles with plosives (your P’s and B’s pop).
- It rates 4.0 out of 5 on Amazon at the time of writing. Good, not glowing.
Who is the Sony INZONE H6 Air for?
The PC or PlayStation player who games for long sessions in a quiet room and cares about sound. Think RPG fans, open-world explorers, and people who get headaches from tight headsets.
Skip it if you game in a noisy living room, on the train, or next to a partner who is trying to sleep. Then a closed wireless headset like the SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Omni is the better buy. And if you already love your regular headphones, the V-Moda BoomPro X adds a mic to them for much less money.
Where can I buy the Sony INZONE H6 Air?
It’s on Amazon US for about 170 bucks at the time of writing (October 2026), below Sony’s suggested 200. Sony.com and Best Buy sell it too.
Light on your head, heavy on the immersion. Take my money.
