Garmin inReach Mini 3 Plus – voice notes and photos from where your phone has no bars

“No Service.” Two words that are fine on a hike right up until you twist an ankle, or the weather turns, or you just want to tell someone at home you’re running three hours late.

The Garmin inReach Mini 3 Plus is a satellite communicator that clips to a backpack strap. It sends texts, 30-second voice messages and photos over the Iridium satellite network, and it has an SOS button that reaches a 24/7 rescue coordination center. This is the version with a color touchscreen, a speaker and a microphone.

It’s a serious gift. For the hiker in your life, it’s also a very good one.

What is the Garmin inReach Mini 3 Plus?

Garmin announced it on December 2, 2025, and it went on sale the same day at $499.99. It follows the inReach Mini 2, and the big change is the color touchscreen. Garmin also sells a plain Mini 3 for $50 less, which has the touchscreen but no voice or photo messages.

According to Garmin:

  • 1.9-inch color touchscreen, plus physical buttons
  • Built-in speaker and microphone for 30-second voice messages, with transcription
  • Text messages of up to 1,600 characters, group chats and emoji reactions
  • Photo sharing through the Garmin Messenger app (you take the photo with your paired phone)
  • Interactive SOS to Garmin Response, plus LiveTrack so family can follow your route
  • IP67 water rating and an impact-resistant case
  • Up to 350 hours of battery with 10-minute tracking, or up to 95 hours in performance messaging mode

How does it work?

You need an active satellite subscription. Android Central lists plans starting at $7.99 a month. Then you can type a message right on the device or pair it with your phone and use the Messenger app like a normal chat app. Garmin says you don’t need to point it at the sky, even in dense forest. If something goes wrong, you press SOS and Garmin’s response center starts a conversation with you and gets help moving.

The good and the not-so-good

What I like:

  • Voice notes. Hikingguy’s Cris Hazzard says the recipient gets the audio plus a transcript, which beats thumb-typing with cold hands.
  • You can write messages without your phone. OutdoorGearLab names the touchscreen as the main reason to pick this one.
  • The siren. Hazzard could hear it clearly at 500 feet in heavy vegetation.
  • 4.7 stars from 157 ratings on Amazon.

What could be better:

  • The price, plus a monthly plan on top.
  • Battery life in real use is lower than the box says. Hazzard measured 130 to 300 hours in low-power tracking against Garmin’s 350.
  • OutdoorGearLab found the small touchscreen “stubborn” and said it’s heavier than the previous Mini, at 128 grams on their scale.
  • The built-in map only shows towns and cities, not trails. You plan routes in the Garmin Explore app on your phone.

Who is the Garmin inReach Mini 3 Plus for?

Backpackers, hunters, backcountry skiers and overlanders who go where phones don’t work, and the people at home who worry about them. If they’ll actually use voice notes and want to type without a phone, this is the one.

If they mostly text from their phone anyway, OutdoorGearLab recommends the lighter Garmin inReach Messenger Plus, which has longer battery life and also sends photos and voice. And if you want a lighter gift for the same backpacker, the Helinox Chair Zero LT is a camp chair that packs down small.

Where can I buy the Garmin inReach Mini 3 Plus?

Garmin sells it on Amazon through its own store. It was about 446 bucks at the time of writing (October 2026), below the $499.99 list price. Remember the subscription.

A tiny box that gets a message out when nothing else can. Worth every gram.
